Fields of Qualification

Prior to 1993, the intention of the original Permaculture Insttitute (founded by Bill Mollison) and republished by the Permaculture Association (Britain) was to have a series of awards:

PERMACULTURE QUALIFICATIONS

Alter a Permaculture Design Course of not less than 72 hours teaching time a student may be issued a Certificate of Course Completion, endorsed by the teacher(s).

A Diploma or Certificate of Permaculture Design shall be issued to holders of the Certificate of Course Completion who have submitted evidence of two years applied work, in any of the fields listed below at one of the Accreditation Meetings convened for the purpose. Standard abbreviations for the qualifications are Dip. Perm. Des. and Cert. Perm. Des.

FIELDS OF QUALIFICATION

Site Development: Designing and working on their own or another site as a demonstration of permaculture principles.

Site Design: Completing designs for others in permaculture systems. (Usually not less than 10) designs, implemented or no)

Administration: Directing, or conducting, of assisting consultancy groups, associations and institutes and developing strategies in permaculture work.

Education: Working on curricula, teaching or course work in permacullure education. —

Finance: Setting up or operating financial systems for ethical investment, community revolving funds, or other self financing systems for communities.

Trusteeship: Setting up or operating land or-property trusts for ethical ends, or land access offices or allied institutions,

System Establishment and Implementation: Setting up or operating nurseries, carlh moving systems, soil conservation strategies, or the supply of goods or services to the permaculture system; working on the implementation of design systems.

Media and Communications: Creating or operating publications or audio-visual aids to communication and education in the permaculture system. Software development.

Manufacturing: Establishing or creating strategies or workshops producing hardware or goods for permaculture design use, or essential technology. Researching and marketing such technology.

Community Development: Planning, assisting with, or implementing community development projects, urban systems, villages or work with disadvantaged groups.

Architecture: Designing or building low cost and low energy use dwellings or structures.

Research: Making a significant contribution to research in the area or field of academic research into permaculture systems and needs.

Each Diploma or Certificate will have one or more of the above categories writlen in on the space provided; thus the Diploma or Certificate will indicate just where the graduate ts considered to be competent. At any time graduates may apply for new Diplomas or Certificates carrying additional categories in which they have been involves for at least one year.
